A camera that keeps its photo on e-paper

Take a photograph and retain it on an e-paper display without a phone.

Not yet assessed Not built by CAIBI

A source to explore and a proposed direction to develop. This is not a full build assessment.

Make it useful to you

Take a photograph and retain it on an e-paper display without a phone.

CAIBI’s proposed addition: Resolve the PaperColor versus M5Paper V1.1 mismatch in the linked sources, then pin matching firmware and CAD. Prove capture and display separately before radio transfer and a case.

Start with the original

Creator build log

Source inspected 10 October 2026. The blog describes a XIAO ESP32S3 Sense and colour PaperColor, but its linked build lists monochrome M5Paper V1.1. Public code pages were found; compatibility, compilation, CAD completeness and physical results remain unverified. Not built or assessed by CAIBI.

See the original source for its photos and demonstrations. We have not copied imagery without confirmed reuse rights. A source prototype is not a photo of this proposed CAIBI build.

From source to something you can finish

What the source provides: An illustrated build log and linked public camera/receiver code pages.

What still needs doing: The blog names PaperColor, while the linked build lists M5Paper V1.1. Resolve the target and matching code/CAD before buying.

Your first milestone: Compile and display one local test image on the exact selected receiver; no battery or enclosure needed yet.

Prompts to move it forward

Check the source before buying
Review the source material I supply for A camera that keeps its photo on e-paper. Make a table of what is provided, missing, contradictory or dependent on a paid service. Identify exact hardware revisions, firmware files, library versions, CAD files and licences. Separate creator claims from your proposed additions. Do not fill gaps with guessed specifications. Finish with one small test that can resolve the biggest uncertainty before I buy parts.

Plan the next step
I want to develop this idea: A camera that keeps its photo on e-paper. Intended outcome: Take a photograph and retain it on an e-paper display without a phone. The source is https://www.schematik.io/blog/esp32-e-ink-photo-camera. CAIBI suggests: Resolve the PaperColor versus M5Paper V1.1 mismatch in the linked sources, then pin matching firmware and CAD. Prove capture and display separately before radio transfer and a case. First inspect the source I supply. Separate what it already does from proposed additions. Ask for my actual board, parts, skill level and missing files. Produce a small staged plan with one bench test per stage. Do not invent pin assignments, dimensions or completed test results.

Design a measured enclosure
Help me design a practical enclosure for A camera that keeps its photo on e-paper. First ask for measured component dimensions, mounting holes, connectors, cable clearance, ventilation and operating conditions. Suggest a printable or off-the-shelf approach. Begin with a fit-test piece before a complete case. Label assumptions and do not invent an enclosure rating.

Check and document the result
Create a test log for A camera that keeps its photo on e-paper. Intended outcome: Take a photograph and retain it on an e-paper display without a phone. Separate expected behaviour from observed results. Include power restart, disconnected inputs, communication failure and the actual physical use. Ask me to provide results, firmware versions, changes, photos and unresolved problems. Never mark a test passed without my evidence.
