Every machine page is a comparison against this one. A tool is worth owning only relative to what the same job costs from somebody who already owns it, and that figure is missing from almost everything written about buying tools, because almost everything written about buying tools is funded by selling them.

What that adds up to

The cheapest substitute on the site is 70p, and it removes an entire skill. Buying the freezer board with its headers already soldered and the probe with its resistor fitted takes soldering out of that build completely, for less than the cost of the solder. The other one costs nothing at all: the letterbox sensor only needs a drill if the letterbox is metal, and a plastic or wooden one needs no drilling.

Neither of those is a machine you buy. Both are a different version of the same part. That is the commonest substitute in this category and it is the one no printer comparison mentions.

Where there is no substitute

The soldering on the letterbox sensor is not avoidable by buying a different part, because the assembly is bespoke. It is still borrowable, and the assessment says where.

Printed parts

A retrofit sensor generally needs a housing, so this is the substitute most of these projects will eventually meet: what a small enclosure costs from a bureau when you own no printer. None of the examples above reaches it yet, and the figures are priced against a typical 30cm³ part rather than against a specific one.

The finding, in both markets

The minimum order decides whether a bureau beats a machine, and it is not visible until checkout. In the US the floor runs from nothing at all, through $25 at two large bureaus, to $150 at a third. In the UK it runs from nothing to £50 plus £10 a model. The same single part costs six times as much at one end of either market as at the other, and no price on that range is wrong: the ones with floors charge setup per model rather than per copy, so they are priced for batches rather than expensive.

One distinction is worth carrying, because most comparisons miss it: no minimum quantity is not the same as no minimum charge. A bureau will happily take an order for one part and still bill you $25 for it.

Six bureaus, four US and two UK, classified as use-case mismatch rather than resolved. Six is enough to show the split is structural rather than local and not enough to say what share of either market sits at each end. These are the bureaus that publish their terms, which is not a sample of anything.

When the substitute is the wrong answer

Fit iteration
Measure, make, does not fit, adjust, make again. Three rounds through a service is a fortnight and three setup fees; three rounds on your own machine is an afternoon. Where a part has to fit something you already own, the case for owning is turnaround, not price, and no cost table on this page captures it.
The wrong material
The cheap routes are PLA, and PLA is brittle in the cold and degrades outdoors. Anything for a letterbox or a freezer wants PETG or ASA, which narrows the choice of who can make it and raises the price. A quote for the wrong material is not a quote.
Many copies of one design
Setup is charged once per model. A bureau is cheapest exactly where a household maker is least likely to be, which is why the same price list reads as expensive to one reader and cheap to another.
Anything not designed yet
The part has to exist as a file before anybody can quote for it. That is a separate skill and it is on the Skills page, not this one.

Not on this page

  • Makerspace membership, which is how the shared-access route is actually priced and is a different comparison from paying per part.
  • What share of bureaus in either market charge a minimum. Six published terms show the split exists; they do not weigh it.
  • Laser cutting and CNC services, which the same argument applies to.
  • Shipping, charged on top of every bureau figure above.
  • Public libraries. Removed rather than deferred, on two grounds that hold whatever gets assessed: coverage is unknown, and the material on offer is PLA, which is brittle in the cold and degrades outdoors. A route that cannot make the part is not a substitute for making it.
