Animated desk light sculpture

A compact desk light with three saved scenes and a physical shape you design yourself.

Not yet assessed Not built by CAIBI

A staged completion guide and prompts. The parts and finished result still need physical validation.

What you will work towards

Build a shaped light with your own colours and animations.

CAIBI’s proposed addition: Select one LED layout, diffuser design, control method and power arrangement.

Guide version 1.0. AI can help explain, adapt and debug; you still measure, assemble and test the physical result.

Start with the original

Existing project

WLED documentation reviewed 19 October 2026. This is a CAIBI proposed desk-light adaptation, not a tested sculpture or electrical assessment.

From source to something you can finish

What the source provides: WLED supplies a configurable lighting platform and documentation.

What still needs doing: A specific LED arrangement, correctly rated supply and wiring, physical diffuser, enclosure and tested brightness limit.

Your first milestone: Run a short compatible LED segment at a conservative brightness before designing the full shape.

Parts to confirm before buying

  • A WLED-supported controller and compatible LED segment
  • Correctly rated low-voltage power supply, wiring, connectors and protection selected for the actual LED load
  • Diffuser material, measured housing and fixings

Use the source wiring and bill of materials as the starting point. Confirm exact variants, availability, tools and complete cost before ordering.

The completion route

  1. Choose a modest LED count. Follow the official wiring guidance and calculate demand before connecting power. Do not treat a software brightness setting as electrical protection.
  2. Install the supported WLED release and save three useful presets. Keep normal controls available before attempting custom firmware.
  3. Test diffuser spacing with a small printed section. Check hotspots and viewing angles at the intended brightness.
  4. Assemble a serviceable enclosure with secure wiring, cable strain relief and ventilation. Record a sustained functional trial.

Prompts to move it forward

Copy a prompt into your AI tool with the source material and your actual parts. Work through one small step at a time and check the output before using it. Choose an AI tool or practise the skills first.

Check the source before buying
Review the source material I supply for Animated desk light sculpture. Make a table of what is provided, missing, contradictory or dependent on a paid service. Identify exact hardware revisions, firmware files, library versions, CAD files and licences. Separate creator claims from your proposed additions. Do not fill gaps with guessed specifications. Finish with one small test that can resolve the biggest uncertainty before I buy parts.

Plan the next step
Help configure my WLED desk sculpture using the official documentation and exact hardware details I provide. Prefer settings and presets over code changes. Ask for LED type, count, supply, wire sizes and intended brightness. Separate electrical design checks from software limits. Propose three scenes, startup behaviour and a test for recovering control after Wi-Fi loss.

Design a measured enclosure
Help design an original light sculpture around my measured LED arrangement. Ask for mounting, diffuser material and separation, controller space, wiring routes and heat clearance. Begin with a short diffuser test piece. Make the electronics accessible without destroying the shell.

Check and document the result
Create a test log for Animated desk light sculpture. Intended outcome: Build a shaped light with your own colours and animations. Separate expected behaviour from observed results. Include power restart, disconnected inputs, communication failure and the actual physical use. Ask me to provide results, firmware versions, changes, photos and unresolved problems. Never mark a test passed without my evidence.

What to test and record

  • Confirm startup brightness and saved presets after three power cycles.
  • Verify local control and the recovery route when the network is unavailable.
  • Run at intended brightness and inspect supply stability, connectors and temperature.
  • Check stability on the desk and diffuser appearance from seated height.

Keep photos, exact parts and software versions with the test log. Failed or incomplete attempts are useful evidence too.

A possible next version

Add a physical control or a permitted status feed after the standalone light works.
