CAIBI guided build · Everyday tools

A phone charging stand with character

An original mechanical stand that holds an existing charger and phone. Charging electronics remain unmodified.

A staged completion guide and prompts. The parts and finished result still need physical validation.

What you will work towards

Turn an existing phone charger into a useful desk object with your own printed stand, cable route and decorative shell.

CAIBI’s proposed addition: Start with an original simple cradle sized to your phone, case and charger. Prove alignment and stability before adding a playful outer shape.

Guide version 1.0. AI can help explain, adapt and debug; you still measure, assemble and test the physical result.

Start with the original

Commercial design inspiration

Reference checked 10 October 2026. Nicky Davis sells a physical product; no downloadable CAD or reuse permission was verified. CAIBI proposes an original design around an unmodified charger, not a replica of the artist’s housing or artwork.

See the original source for its photos and demonstrations. We have not copied imagery without confirmed reuse rights. A source prototype is not a photo of this proposed CAIBI build.

Parts to confirm before buying

  • Your existing charger and its manufacturer instructions, compatible phone and actual case
  • Callipers or careful ruler measurements, charger cable and power supply
  • Print access or a prototyping service, suitable material and optional non-slip feet

Use the source wiring and bill of materials as the starting point. Confirm exact variants, availability, tools and complete cost before ordering.

The completion route

  1. Record phone/case and charger dimensions, cable exits and the charger’s clearance instructions. Sketch the simplest stable cradle.
  2. Print only a small charger-retention coupon. Check insertion, removal and cable clearance without forcing the charger.
  3. Print a plain functional stand and test charging alignment, phone access and resistance to normal cable pulls on a desk.
  4. Add your own decorative shell only after the simple stand works. Repeat the charging and fit checks with the shell attached.

Prompts to move it forward

Copy a prompt into your AI tool with the source material and your actual parts. Work through one small step at a time and check the output before using it. Choose an AI tool or practise the skills first.

Check the source before buying
Review the source material I supply for A phone charging stand with character. Make a table of what is provided, missing, contradictory or dependent on a paid service. Identify exact hardware revisions, firmware files, library versions, CAD files and licences. Separate creator claims from your proposed additions. Do not fill gaps with guessed specifications. Finish with one small test that can resolve the biggest uncertainty before I buy parts.

Plan the next step
This first build has no firmware. Help me write a mechanical design brief and measurement checklist for an original phone charging stand. Ask for the phone, case, charger model and manufacturer requirements. Identify missing dimensions, fit risks and a small test coupon. Do not invent a charger circuit or copy the reference artist’s housing.

Design a measured enclosure
Use my actual measurements to design an original removable cradle around an unmodified charger. Preserve manufacturer ventilation, spacing and cable requirements. Include a stable base, phone removal clearance and service access. Produce a dimensioned fit coupon before the full stand. Avoid glue or fasteners that could damage the charger.

Check and document the result
Create a test log for A phone charging stand with character. Intended outcome: Turn an existing phone charger into a useful desk object with your own printed stand, cable route and decorative shell. Separate expected behaviour from observed results. Include power restart, disconnected inputs, communication failure and the actual physical use. Ask me to provide results, firmware versions, changes, photos and unresolved problems. Never mark a test passed without my evidence.

What to test and record

  • Confirm the phone charges with its real case and intended orientation before and after adding the shell.
  • Check normal removal and cable movement do not tip the stand or dislodge the charger.
  • Compare charging behaviour with the charger used normally, following its manufacturer guidance; stop if there is unexpected heat or repeated charging interruption.
  • Record material, print settings, measured clearances and photographs; do not claim safety certification.

Keep photos, exact parts and software versions with the test log. Failed or incomplete attempts are useful evidence too.

A possible next version

Personalise the outer design. Treat any separate lighting system as an additional electrical project, not part of the first stand.
