Personal data ticker

Put one useful value on your desk, with its units, update time and a clear offline state.

A staged completion guide and prompts. The parts and finished result still need physical validation.

What you will work towards

Put one chosen public data value on a dedicated desk display.

CAIBI’s proposed addition: Choose an API, show its update time and handle missing values without displaying stale data as live.

Guide version 1.0. AI can help explain, adapt and debug; you still measure, assemble and test the physical result.

Start with the original

Tutorial foundation

Tutorial located; parts, current dependencies and physical results have not been tested by CAIBI. Additional source inspected 10 October 2026: Additional local message-board route using MAX7219 modules and a logic buffer. Change default access credentials and verify the actual supply path/current before enclosing.

See the original source for its photos and demonstrations. We have not copied imagery without confirmed reuse rights. A source prototype is not a photo of this proposed CAIBI build.

From source to something you can finish

What the source provides: An OLED data example and a separate LED matrix message-board route.

What still needs doing: Select one display path, verify power, and define stale-data handling and provider access.

Your first milestone: Show a saved sample value and an explicit offline status.

The tutorial calls CoinDesk's old v1 price endpoints; the historical endpoint was reported suspended in 2022 and the current one did not respond when checked.

Alternatives the code does not use

  • Expect to replace the price API and its parsing before this works.

From the linked tutorial on 24 Sep 2026. Service terms change; check the provider before relying on one.

Parts to confirm before buying

  • Choose either the source OLED route or the LED matrix route, with the exact board and matching display library
  • For a matrix, confirm its supply needs and the source logic-buffer arrangement; do not power it from an unverified GPIO or regulator path
  • USB data cable, documented power supply, and one permitted data source if live data is needed

Use the source wiring and bill of materials as the starting point. Confirm exact variants, availability, tools and complete cost before ordering.

The completion route

  1. Pick one use: an offline message, a public data value or a personal read-only feed. Start with a saved sample response or message.
  2. Run the correct display example, then show the value, units and a short status label. Test long and missing values.
  3. For live data, document the provider limits and fetch one permitted field. Keep secret API keys out of public code and logs.
  4. Add bounded retries, update age and an explicit unavailable state. Preserve the last value only when visibly marked stale.
  5. Validate the power arrangement and display brightness, then measure and print a cable-clearance coupon before the desk case.

Prompts to move it forward

Copy a prompt into your AI tool with the source material and your actual parts. Work through one small step at a time and check the output before using it. Choose an AI tool or practise the skills first.

Check the source before buying
Review the source material I supply for Personal data ticker. Make a table of what is provided, missing, contradictory or dependent on a paid service. Identify exact hardware revisions, firmware files, library versions, CAD files and licences. Separate creator claims from your proposed additions. Do not fill gaps with guessed specifications. Finish with one small test that can resolve the biggest uncertainty before I buy parts.

Plan the next step
Help me make a single-purpose desk ticker from my supplied display example and sample data. Ask for my exact board/display, source response and intended refresh interval. Parse only the required fields and show units, data age and unavailable/stale states. Keep offline sample mode working. Respect the provider rate limits, use bounded retry backoff and never print credentials. If the feed needs a secret that should not be on the device, propose a minimal server-side route and disclose its hosting dependency before implementing it.

Design a measured enclosure
Design a stable desk enclosure for my chosen display variant using measurements. Keep the complete readable area visible, allow the real cable bend and preserve access to reset. Do not combine OLED and matrix mounting dimensions. Start with a faceplate and connector fit test.

Check and document the result
Create a test log for Personal data ticker. Intended outcome: Put one chosen public data value on a dedicated desk display. Separate expected behaviour from observed results. Include power restart, disconnected inputs, communication failure and the actual physical use. Ask me to provide results, firmware versions, changes, photos and unresolved problems. Never mark a test passed without my evidence.

What to test and record

  • Sample, missing, malformed and overlong values produce readable output.
  • Disconnect networking: old data is labelled stale and the device remains responsive.
  • Provider error or rate limit does not trigger rapid repeated requests.
  • Restart without a network still gives a meaningful status.
  • Record actual power arrangement, brightness and enclosed operation before committing to the final case.

Keep photos, exact parts and software versions with the test log. Failed or incomplete attempts are useful evidence too.

A possible next version

Add a physical button to switch between a few related views. A calendar, football score or travel feed needs its own provider and privacy checks.
